An Immersive Journey Through tanzania’s Wild Seasons

The green Season

January - february

Tanzania’s dry season brings ideal conditions for both safari and coastal experiences. In the southern Serengeti, this is calving season, thousands of Wildebeest give birth, attracting predators and offering incredible wildlife viewing. Birdlife is also at its peak, with migratory species adding colour and activity across the parks. Over on the coast, Zanzibar enjoys long, sunny days and calm seas, perfect for swimming, snorkelling, sailing, or simply relaxing on the beach. With clear skies and fewer visitors, it’s a great time to explore both sides of Tanzania, from the bush to the beach.

THE PEAK SAFARI SEASON

JUNE - OCTOBER

This is one of the best times to visit Tanzania and also the most popular. The dry season brings cooler mornings, clear skies, and excellent wildlife viewing. Animals gather around water sources, especially in places like Tarangire, Ruaha, and Ngorongoro, making sightings frequent and rewarding. In the Serengeti, the Great Migration moves north, with the chance to witness dramatic river crossings. On the coast, conditions are just as ideal with sunny days, cooler nights, and a light breeze. It’s perfect for swimming, snorkelling, diving, or simply enjoying the relaxed pace of island life on Zanzibar or Mafia Island. Safaris are exciting, beaches are calm, and the experiences feel well-balanced and memorable.

The Long Rains

march - May

The long rains bring new life to Tanzania, transforming the landscapes into a lush, vibrant green. This quieter season on safari means fewer vehicles and a more personal experience in the bush. Wildlife sightings can be a bit more challenging with thicker vegetation, but the scenery is striking, the air is fresh, and the atmosphere feels calm and unhurried. Along the coast, short tropical showers are common but often pass quickly, leaving behind clear skies and cooler temperatures. It’s an ideal time for travellers who enjoy a slower pace and fewer crowds.

SHORT RAINS AND FESTIVE SEASON

NOVEMBER - DECEMBER

With the arrival of the short rains, Tanzania begins to green again. Afternoon showers bring a welcome freshness to the landscape, softening the ground and encouraging new growth. On safari, wildlife activity continues, and the early stages of the wildebeest migration start to take shape as herds move back toward the southern Serengeti. Birdwatching is excellent during this time, and the parks are quieter, making for a more relaxed experience. Along the coast, rain tends to be light and scattered, with plenty of sunshine in between. It’s a peaceful season, with both bush and beach feeling renewed and full of life.
