Fitness Levels
Our hike through Mount Kenya National Park covers diverse terrain and reaches higher altitudes, which can be physically demanding at times. However, this is not a race and we will be accompanied by experienced park rangers who are there to support guests of varying fitness levels.
Whether you prefer a steady pace or need a little extra encouragement along the way, you’ll be well looked after. A moderate level of fitness and a sense of adventure are recommended, but no technical hiking experience is required.
Health and Travel Insurance
Comprehensive travel and medical insurance is essential and remains the traveller’s responsibility.
Please ensure your policy covers all medical needs and activities included in your itinerary.
Maleria
Malaria does exist in Kenya, but the areas we travel through are generally low-risk. Many of us have lived here for years without ever encountering it. Taking malaria tablets is completely your choice. Some guests prefer to take them, while others don’t.
If you’re considering medication, be aware that certain options can make travellers feel a bit nauseous. Your doctor can recommend a gentler alternative if you prefer something less intrusive.
Yellow Fever
Travellers entering Kenya may need to show proof of a Yellow Fever Vaccination, particularly if they are arriving from, or have transited through, a country where Yellow Fever is present. For those travellers, a valid certificate is required for anyone aged one year and above.
The certificate becomes valid 10 days after vaccination and remains valid for life.
If you are arriving directly from most of Europe or North America, the vaccine is not mandatory, though it is still recommended for travellers visiting certain regions where Yellow Fever can occur.
Please speak with your healthcare provider to decide what’s best for you.
Cholera & Water Safety
Certain regions of Kenya occasionally experience cholera outbreaks, though it is extremely rare among travellers staying in established lodges and camps.
Drink bottled or purified water only, avoid ice in local eateries, and maintain regular hand-washing or sanitising.
All properties on our route follow strict hygiene and water-handling standards.
Food and Water-borne Illnesses
Travel-related illnesses such as typhoid and hepatitis A exist in Kenya, as they do in many parts of the world. Good hygiene, safe water, and dining at trusted lodges are usually all that’s required to avoid them.
Your healthcare provider may recommend general travel vaccinations before your trip.
FOOD & BEVERAGE
We do our best to accommodate all dietary needs. However, some ingredients that are easily found in Western countries may not always be available in Kenya, so a little flexibility is appreciated.
Please list any allergies, dietary preferences, or relevant health conditions on your registration form. Our chefs will receive this information ahead of your arrival to ensure you’re well looked after.
Some lodges include house wines and local spirits. Premium drinks will be charged separately.
SAFETY
Kenya is generally a safe and welcoming country, known for its friendly and hospitable people. As with any destination, some areas are safer than others, and our travel routes have been planned with care to ensure your comfort and security throughout the journey.
We recommend leaving valuables, including jewellery, at home.
Urban Awareness: In cities such as Nairobi and Mombasa, petty crime can occur, particularly in busy public areas.
Keep your belongings secure, avoid wearing noticeable jewellery, and stay mindful of your surroundings.
Wildlife Safety: Kenya’s national parks are home to extraordinary wildlife. Whether on foot, in camp, or on game drives, your guides will brief you on how to stay safe around animals.
Listening to their instructions ensures a safe and unforgettable experience.
Road and Travel Conditions: Road quality varies across the country, especially in rural regions.
We work exclusively with trusted drivers and reputable operators to ensure safe and reliable transport throughout your trip.
WEATHER
Given the higher altitudes of Northern Kenya, particularly in the regions surrounding Mount Kenya, early mornings and evenings can be noticeably chilly, especially during hikes and sunrise starts. Layers are essential to stay warm and comfortable.
By contrast, the Kenyan Coast is consistently warm and sunny, with average temperatures between 26–32°C, offering that classic tropical heat.
TIPPING
The nationally recommended gratuity is US$20 per guest per day, though this is not compulsory.
Most guests choose to give their tip to management, who then distribute it fairly among the wider team, including the many behind-the-scenes staff who help make your stay exceptional. If someone goes out of their way to make your experience special, you’re welcome to tip them directly as well.
Safari guides are usually tipped separately, at KES 5,000 per car per day.
SIM CARDS
If you need a local SIM card, Safaricom offers the most reliable coverage across Kenya and is the network we recommend.
There are also convenient eSIM options available through apps such as Montysim.
