Frequently Asked Questions
Tanzania
Visa Requirements
Most travellers require an eVisa for Tanzania. Please complete your application at least one week before departure to avoid unnecessary delays.
Apply through the official government portal:
www.immigration.go.tz
Destination Details: Refer to your travel confirmation.
Reason for Travel: Tourist.
Fitness Levels
Your itinerary may involve walks or hikes through Tanzania’s national parks, with varied terrain and occasional altitude changes depending on the region.
If your itinerary includes time around Mount Kilimanjaro, please note that the foothills and surrounding landscapes involve uneven paths and moderate inclines. These walks are designed to be accessible and enjoyable, offering the atmosphere of Kilimanjaro without the extreme physical requirements of a full ascent.
A moderate level of fitness is recommended, but no technical hiking or mountaineering experience is necessary. A sense of adventure is the only non-negotiable.
Health & Travel Insurance
Comprehensive travel and medical insurance is essential and remains the traveller’s responsibility.
Please ensure your policy covers all medical needs and activities included in your itinerary.
Malaria
Malaria is present in Tanzania, though the level of risk depends on the areas you visit. Taking malaria tablets is entirely up to you. Some guests prefer to take them, while others simply rely on mosquito spray, long sleeves in the evenings, and the fact that most lodges use nets and repellents.
If you’re unsure, have a quick chat with your doctor and they will guide you towards the option that feels best for you.
Yellow Fever
A Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate is required for travellers arriving from, or transiting through, Yellow Fever risk countries.
For travellers arriving directly from most European or North American countries, the vaccine is not mandatory, though it remains recommended for those visiting certain regions.
The certificate becomes valid 10 days after vaccination and is valid for life.
Cholera & Water Safety
Tanzania has experienced cholera outbreaks in certain areas, though this is extremely uncommon among travellers staying in reputable camps and lodges.
To stay safe, drink bottled or purified water, avoid ice in local restaurants, and sanitise hands regularly.
All properties on our itinerary follow strict hygiene and water-safety protocols.
Food and Water-borne Illnesses
Illnesses such as typhoid and hepatitis A exist in parts of Tanzania. These are generally easy to avoid with good hand hygiene, drinking safe water, and eating in established, trusted lodges and restaurants.
Your doctor may recommend standard travel vaccinations before your trip.
Food & Beverage
We do our best to accommodate dietary requirements. However, ingredients available in Western markets may not always be accessible in Tanzania, so a degree of flexibility is appreciated.
Please list all allergies, dietary preferences, and relevant health conditions on your registration form. The chefs will be informed ahead of your arrival.
Some lodges include local house wines and spirits. Premium beverages will be an additional cost.
Safety
Tanzania is known for its warm hospitality and welcoming communities. As with any country, certain areas are safer than others, and our routes have been curated with your wellbeing in mind.
We recommend leaving valuable jewellery at home. The wild looks good on you, no extras required.
Urban Awareness: In major cities such as Arusha, Moshi, and Dar es Salaam, petty crime can occur.
Keep personal items secure, avoid flashy jewellery, and stay aware of your surroundings in busy areas.
Wildlife Safety: Tanzania’s national parks from the Serengeti to Tarangire are home to powerful wildlife. Your guides will brief you on how to move safely around animals both on foot and in vehicles. Following their guidance ensures a safe and truly awe-inspiring experience.
Road and Travel Condition: Roads can vary widely in quality, especially in rural and remote regions.
We work exclusively with trusted operators and experienced drivers to ensure safe and reliable transfers throughout your journey.
Weather
Tanzania’s climates vary across regions:
Northern Circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Manyara): Expect cooler mornings and evenings, especially during the dry months.
Coastal Regions (Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam): Warm, tropical, and humid year-round, with temperatures averaging 26–32°C.
Tipping
The recommended national gratuity is US$20 per guest per day, though this is not compulsory.
You can also provide gratuities to management, who distribute them fairly across the wider team, including the many behind-the-scenes staff who help make your stay exceptional.
Safari guides are typically tipped separately, at US$30-40 per day, or the equivalent in Tanzanian Shillings.
SIM Cards
For local connectivity, Vodacom and Airtel offer the most reliable coverage across Tanzania.
eSIM options are also available through services such as Montysim.
